SONY LAPTOP COMPUTER HELP!!! My laptop is going extremely slow!?

I just got my grandpas old sony laptop. Im wondering if there is a way to speed this old thing up..
More importantly i was wondering if there was a way to set it back to factory settings without having to purchase a recovery cd. Maybe like a download or something.
If not just any tips on getting this old thing to work faster.
Another question: how do i get rid of the McAfee virus protection its like really annoying..
