Hand baggage for British Airways transatlantic flights?

I fly from Heathrow to America and I was wondering as my max 2 pieces of hand luggage, I would be able to take a handbag and my laptop (in this case)? on their site it says that a bag and small hand luggage can be taken further? So do not know if two pieces of "personal baggage" could be taken up?
