Netbook The Environmentalist
The concerns over the state of the planet have long been played out in the press and stressed by men residing in the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station accompanied by the penguins. We know that the planet needs looking after and we are for the most part willing to help out but what does this mean in terms of our beloved technology? Are some computers more environmentally friendly, in short are the new generation of netbooks better for the poor planet than the previously adored laptops?
Netbooks have been championed as the perfect on the go technology because they are lightweight and small and as a result have a longer lasting battery than the larger laptops. They are the perfect computer for the daily commute because you can surf the net and answer emails easily. They use a smaller amount of energy to power them because they are significantly smaller than your normal laptop, which means they are using much less energy. Using less electricity to charge and power the netbook means less traditional fuels being used to provide the electricity.
The main problem concerning battery operated technology is that when they run out we have no qualms about throwing away the used battery and replacing them, great for us bad for the planet! Landfill sites are full of broken or unwanted technological waste, so, where does this leave the netbook? With the longer lasting battery you could definitely argue that the netbook computer is more environmentally friendly than the traditional laptop and it looks as though technology is set to continue getting greener with companies such as Sony creating a green netbook that not only uses power saving technology but it is also made out of 20% recycled material.
With all these exciting developments the future is definitely getting greener and the world of technology is dutifully creating new products and improving old models to ensure technology and the planet are still here 100 years from now!
