Are netbooks as good as laptops?
I’m looking to get my dad a present for christmas and find netbooks are cheaper. He mostly uses his computer for surfing the net, watching videos and uploading photos. Would a netbook be a good alternative?
A netbook is designed for all the tasks you’ve outlined there but for when your on the move. Netbooks are generally cheaper – you can pick up a bargain laptop although I’m more inclined to think that quality would be compromised.
Regarding computing power, most mini laptops feature the Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor which is perfectly adapt for surfing the web, using simple applications and watching videos simultaneously. Storage can be an issue with netbooks although the use of SSDs or solid state drive storage means there are no moving parts – in other words an SSD netbook is very durable.
Keyboards are notoriously smaller on netbooks, although if you know where to look you can do quite well. If you want a decent keyboard and screen, you can’t go wrong with an HP. The new HP mini 1000 hits the shelves in January which is perhaps a bit late for you. You might like to look at the Samsung NC10 which has a keyboard specially adapted for larger letter keys (eg. a,b,c etc.)
